Automated sub-figure generation using a loop in LaTeX

9. October 2015 by tom 9 Comments

Consider the following scenario: By changing one or more parameters in an experimental method, we produce a series of figures. We then want to include these figures in a research report, manuscript, or thesis. It is often possible to reduce the amount of code/typing through automation of subfigure generation. More specifically, one sub-figure environment is … [Read more…]

Combining sub-figures to a single figure for submission to journal

7. October 2015 by tom 12 Comments

While preparing a manuscript for publication, it may become necessary to combine several sub-figure to a single figure outside the main LaTeX document. A possible reason may be package conflicts with the journal’s class- or style-file. Therefore, a journal might disallow usage of LaTeX packages such as subfigure, subfig, or subcaption. Another reason may be … [Read more…]

Figure with border in LaTeX

20. February 2014 by tom 1 Comment

Often, figures have a white background which makes the figure border invisible on white paper. If a figure has several disconnected elements, it looks better to delimit them with a frame around figure. The adjustbox package scales, resizes, trims, rotates, and also frames LaTeX content. Conveniently, these functions can be exported to the \includegraphics command, … [Read more…]

Sub-caption above subfigures and subtables

23. January 2014 by tom 6 Comments

I was recently asked an interesting question about how to place a sub-caption on top of a sub-figure. By default, sub-captions are produced below sub-figures. When using the subfigure package, the answer is reasonably easy. The package has an option to move the sub-captions on top of the figure. However, I was curious how other … [Read more…]

Placing figures/tables side-by-side (\subfig)

24. May 2011 by tom 34 Comments

The subfigure package was replace by the subfig package quite a while ago. I therefore decided to replace my old post on that topic (Placing figures/tables side-by-side with subfigure) with an introduction to the subfig package. The package simplifies the positioning, captioning (I wonder if that’s a word) and labeling of small “sub” figures and … [Read more…]
